Meet the Bishop
On March 5, 1972, I repented of my sins and was baptized in the name
of Jesus Christ. Seventeen months later I was filled with the Holy
Ghost at home while praying at my bedside. Eleven months later, God
called me to preach His word; and I confessed my calling to the
ministry.
I thank my father-in-the-Lord, Bishop W. E. Smith, for the years
that God allowed me the privilege of being taught by him. Since
then, I have had to use many things that I learned under his wise
counseling.
Due to Bishop Smith's failing health, on February 8, 1976, I was
privileged to serve as his assistant pastor. During that time, I was
appointed State Overseer of Tennessee by our former presiding
bishop, Bishop J. Richard Lee. Due to Bishop Smith's unselfish
motives and his deep love and concern for the congregation he had
led for over forty years, and his continually failing health, he
resigned as pastor. On October 8, 1978, I was elected pastor of the
church. After Bishop Smith's death, I was appointed Bishop for
Tennessee.
My wife of many years is Sister Peggy Johnson, formerly Myers. We
have four children, George Jr., Kim, Terri, and Jimmy. We currently
have nine grandchildren and experienced the arrival of our first great-grandchild
August of 2006. We thank God and give Him the praise that we have
been privileged to see all our children, and several of our
grandchildren, baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and filled with
the Holy Ghost.
On May 12, 1984, we were privileged to go on national radio on WLAC
1510 AM, located in Nashville, TN. We were on that station for
several years until they changed their format. During the time we
were on the air, we were able to correspond with hundreds of
listeners and saints of God over a large portion of the continental
United States; and we were able to meet and talk with several
ministers throughout the country.
During our time as pastor, the attendance averaged 100-125. We saw
the attendance as high as 225 during a Sunday School drive. Over the
years several ministers in the home church were involved in a wide
range of ministries including: youth leaders, jail ministry, home
mission work, and hospital and nursing home visitation. Our youth
were involved in many activities and fund-raising projects that go
toward a youth camp each year.
On September 26, 2004, at God's leading I resigned as pastor, and
Elder Mickey Dodd stepped in as pastor. I continue to be active in
ministry in the home church.
